Ok, some time ago... I (well, actually, my dad) found a PSP... In our own garbage bin.


So what happened is that one of the guys renting our house downstairs left, and he tossed out all his trash into our garbage bin. It was so full of crap and we couldn't close the lid, so my dad decided to re-locate some of the rubbish in it.

While he was moving the trash somewhere else, he saw this PSP box. It was sort of heavy, so he decided to have a look at what was inside... there was actually a PSP.

The box was for a new Slim, but what's inside was actually a Phat. I guess what happened is probably that the downstairs guy bought a slim and tossed out his partially broken phat afterwards, in the box of his slim. The thing works all fine, but has a semi cracked back. (Heh, if it was perfect, he wouldn't have tossed it out then).

This actually happened a few months ago, but only 3 people (discounting my family ofcourse) knew about it before now. Additionally, the PSP came with a battery inside it and a charger. No memory card, so I just went and bought a 4GB one myself.

Am I lucky, or am I lucky?

The PSP came with offcicial firmware 3.95, so up to now, there was no way for me to install custom firmware. But as you all know, recently, the ChickHEN was released. Now the time has come.

Upgraded to OFW 5.03 and loaded ChickHEN. Now I'm considering what to do next. What do you guys think. Hellcats Recovery Flasher? Try making a Pandora?

So right now I'm at the (public) library downloading some stuff to my portable HDD...

There's this guy besides me. He keeps looking over to my screen (like almost as much as looking at his own screen), and it gets annoying, so I stare straight back at his face to make him look away... He himself is streaming some anime. I wonder how he can concentrate on his anime if he's looking over at my screen half the time. (Who the hell goes to the library just to stream anime anyway... especially with volume on mute, since it's a library)

Anyway, I start looking at my book (cause I have mid-term exams in a week). And he keeps looking over, at the book now. Like wtf man? This textbook is full of... maths and graphs... really not that interesting....

So some woman booked the comp, and I moved to another one somewhere across the room.... Guess what, that guy followed me across the room so he can sit next to me and look at my book.... ok? whatever, he can look at the book all he wants. he won't understand it. But seriously man, the guy has problems...

And he keeps looking over at it, probably still thinking it's a book about hacking computers. Maybe because I'm using a download manager, and he probably thought it was hacking... I'll just keep reading my book, he can keep staring over at it (zero beta CAPM... go try understanding that) and waste his time, whatever. And that's where I'm at now.

So some time ago, I did a partial (pretty much complete) overhaul of my system. Blog Article.

And I looked at my power supply. It says 480W on it. I estimate my system to not even take close to that, so I though maybe I could skip out on upgrading it...

Initially, there's been some random crashes and shutdowns, but I couldn't pinpoint it to the power supply, although it was one my top suspects due to the weird behavior of the crashes.

And some time later, like a week ago, I was encoding some shit, and there was an explosion noise, and the whole thing shut down. (Scared me big time). It seems my power supply blew itself up... Opened it, and one of the capacitor things blew off, other parts looked pretty burnt black as well... (And there doesn't seem to much stuff inside it. My brothers power supply has way more content, difference between good and crap power supplies I guess).

Like WTF?!? My system only takes like at most 270W of power, with overclocking (according to numerous power supply calculators. Hell, I'm not even running a GPU at all). The fudgeing power supply can't even supply half of what it's rated at? What bullshit is this?

Tried to find the brand on the power supply. I can't even find a brand. It just says ATX Power Supply. Err... even the normal crap brand "generic" ones have brands... So this one is crapper than crap? It came with my old pre-built system a long time ago.

Anyways, comp doesn't start now. Have to wait till the 20th, till I can get my CoolerMaster Centurion T05 case I'm planning to get, and start my computer again. Currently writing this on a laptop.

EDIT: Got the case, 460W power supply, should be plenty.

Well, I've thought about upgrade my computer for a long time, but I never really got to it until now. Maybe going to Melbourne was the final push that tipped the boat.

What I upgraded from (is really weak)~

Sempron 2800 @1.6ghz (weak)
1+0.5GB DDR 400 RAM
OLD motherboard that doesn't support SATA, DDR2, nor PCI-E. (lol).
Integrated graphics the power of a GeForce2. (OMG Guild Wars runs under 10fps on low settings and 800x600. Even Warcraft 3 lags, on highest. It supports... Pixel Shader 1.1!!!).

Ok... to some of you guys, it's probably not much of an upgrade, since none of the parts are super high end and uber hardcore, but consider what I usually use my desktop for. That is, mostly firefox, school work, watching movies/anime and encoding. I pretty much hardly ever play games these days. So... no, I don't need a core i7 extreme edition + 2 4870x2's in crossfire + 16GB DDR3 RAM + $300mobo + water cooling. I'm way more of a price/value kind of person than an enthusiast.


Thoughts and comments~

• Windows loads MUCH faster than previously, which I'm quite happy about. Like 5+ times faster. I attribute it to a combination of: faster CPU, less bloat in current windows install, less fragmentation, faster HDD.
  
• Similar to Zinga's situation for his recently upgraded system, my mobo also takes about 4 seconds before the beep and BIOS loads. Sort of annoying, but it's actually not that bad, since I generally leave my comp on for long durations and don't really restart often.
  
• The fan my CPU came with is pretty crap. Same model fan as my old Sempron2800. 2000RPM on idle, 3000RPM on load. (6000RPM when I close my shitty box with no ventilation whatsoever. EDIT: Got new box. Don't have this problem any more.)
  
• Tried and successfully ran 2 1080p (1920x1080) vids simultaneously at full speed. My old comp barely runs and sometimes lags on a single 720p (1280x720) vid (using FFDShow. CoreAVC does fine).
  
• It seems I really should have upgraded my box and power supply. Box has no fans whatsoever, and traps heat like a furnace, and my power supply somehow also goes way hot (can barely feel the heat on my brother's power supply). If I close my lid, the inside of the box heats up, and the CPU fan goes up to 6000RPM and becomes WAY loud. EDIT: Power supply is GAY and blew. Getting new box and power supply. Looking at the CoolerMaster Centurion T05. EDIT2: Got my new Centurion T-05 case. Seems much better than my old box, has decent ventilation and everything.
  
• EDIT: I can overclock fine. It's just the problem with the power supply. EDIT2: Easily overclocked to 2.64GHz (20% overclock), ran Prime for 8hrs without any errors. I could quite easily do more, but I can't really be bothered, tis enough.
  Spoiler for old stuff:

  Tried to overclock, and couldn't even do a measly 5%. Crashed 2hr into stress test. Probably mostly due to a combination of my box, fan and power supply being crap, or maybe the motherboard, which runs quite hot. What's weird is that Prime95 never returns an error, the whole system just crashes with no signs of error whatsoever. And when the system crashes, it cannot be turned on without completely draining the power. That is, pressing the start or restart button does nothing. Only way to start it again is to pull the power cord, and put it back in. I'm thinking it probably has something to do with the motherboard or power supply rather than the CPU or memory, due to the weird behaviour of the crash. I'm going to try underclock the memory and the cpu one by one to try to isolate the problem.
• Guild Wars @ 1400x1050, max settings besides for AA runs at 30fps on my integrated ATI x3200. Sufficient. That and WC3, CS and UT2004 are like the only games I've played in ages. And none of them need a good GPU. So I can't really be bothered getting one until I need it.

Yeah, so since sometime last week, I've been in Melbourne. (Heh, I suck at this kind of threads...)

Well, keeping with the tradition of all these "I'll be away" threads here... I'll be away for about another week or so. You may or may not have realized that I haven't really been on the internet much during this time. Because currently I can only access the net through the public libraries (just canceled Melbourne internet package, because once we go back to Canberra, Melbourne house will be empty).

Holidays isn't too interesting currently, not doing too much. And our Melbourne house can't even compare with our Canberra house. Being cramped in the same room as my brother, and there's only 1 bathroom, so I have to often wait for a shower. Well, I guess I'm too spoiled from our Canberra house, which is quite large if I have to say so (8+ bedrooms, 4 toilets, 3 levels). Did do some interesting things though, and being in Melbourne means a good chance to upgrade my computer, which should have been done a long time ago.

Anyway, prob won't be online for like another 3 or 4 days, seeya.

2 days ago, it just went silent. I didn't drop it or anything, must have died itself. Try to plug it in, and absolutely nothing happens, makes no sound.

Along with 140GB of my data. It hasn't even been a full year yet since I bought it, which means I maybe able to get a refund/replacement for the HDD, but the data is not coming back.

Now on second thought, it could be the case that the electronics within the case thing that holds the HDD broke rather than the HDD itself. I'm hoping it's that, then I just need to buy a new case, which is much cheaper.

I am now 4 weeks into uni. 3 weeks ago, I tried to buy 2 books from the on campus bookshop (Microeconomics and Business). Seems like they ran out of copies, due to larger than expected enrolments.

So about 2 weeks ago, the guy tells me they'll get one of the books on thursday (2 weeks ago). On Thursday, I asked them, and they said it might be there on Friday. So I went on Friday. Still not there. Monday is a public holiday, so on Tuseday, I went and asked them. The guy said it'll be on the next Thrusday. (What the fudge?!?) So then I went on Thursday again. It's not there. I asked them why. He said it was supposed to be sent out last week, But actually wasn't, and was just sent out only just then. (What the fudge?!?!?) So I went there on Friday. Nothing. He blamed it on the fact that the book is packed with a mini dictionary, and these 2 items came from 2 different companies, thus the trouble...  Monday (yesterday), he said it'll likely come later on the day... still nothing at closing time. Today morning, nothing, and at 3:40pm, I went there again... ... ... ...THEY FINALLY HAVE IT... (ZOMG!!!).. and it cost me AUS$98.95.

Now... That's just one book. So I ask them about the other one... They said it won't come until at least the 26th... (What the fudge?!?!?!?!?!)... But i probably won't get it then, because there's about another 50 people waiting for it, and they already written down requests... So I'll probably need to wait for the next batch (What the fudge?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!)... By that time, it would almost be the mid sememster tests...
